Web usability testing - concept stage, pre-launch or existing site

Testing services:

  • assessing existing site or competitor sites with/without example users to identify what is working well and what ideally should to be avoided
  • task based user testing with users to identify issues (note that focus groups won't give you the detail you need to fix usability issues)
  • testing navigation / wireframes / page designs with users pre build or pre launch
  • help with pre-launch testing including browser testing in Safari, Firefox or Chrome on Apple
  • consistency quality control including brand policing

There is no substitute for testing with real users who are coming cold to your site i.e. have not seen it before and don't know any of the background. It's truly eye opening and immensely valuable because if a user can't use a site they won't use it. You will kick yourself for not having done it before.

It's a myth that it needs to take a long time and delay progress. Three users typically uncover 80% of problems with a site and I normally book an extra one in just in case of a no show. You normally find more users means more people repeating the same pain and you just don't need that when it is more important to fix the issue and retest ideally.

Depending on the site there are various ways to conduct the user tests with a small problem area with four users doing a round of testing followed by issues and ideas to resolve them delivered within 3 days costing as little as £195 plus VAT.

"Pre-launch interface testing– don’t let your customers point out dead links, sales processes not working in Internet Explorer 6, typos, etc. The closer one has been to a project the less likely they are to pick up problems with it.

User testing with or without video– the customer is always right. Testing just three users will provide you with valuable lessons."
