Marta is a usability consultant / information architect - in fact one of the UK’s most experienced usability consultants and got into digital in the early days of the web phenomenon when she bagged her dream graduate job of Account Handler in an advertising agency. They threw websites and interactive CD-ROMs at her and she really got her teeth into performing miracles while embracing new concepts / technologies, unflustered by the crazy timescales. Pretty soon she was in charge of a £1m pa Hewlett Packard account managing cutting edge websites selling HP servers and workstations. All her projects agency side and then responsibilities for various blue chip websites thereafter has Marta playing the Information Architect role.
She enjoys seeing commercial results as well as improving the user experience, priding herself on being a truly commercially focussed usability consultant and information architect living very much the practical realities of modern business and the economic climate.
She has a first degree in ‘Design and Media Management’ and additionally as a Post Graduate studied Commercial Web site Design, Cognitive Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction and User Centred Interface Design. In layman’s terms the latter three mean knowing the capabilities of the human brain, understanding how we interact with computers and designing user interfaces accurately around the target audience in a timely fashion. She also taken more Jakob Nielsen (the grandfather of usability and information architecture) masterclasses than you can shake a stick at.
In fact Marta’s greatest asset is her comprehension of the web audience, predicting their thoughts and behaviour - connecting you with your customers like never before. This coupled with Chartered Institute of Marketing training and title of Marketing Manager / Ecommerce Manager / Head of Online under her belt, means she won’t just tell you what’s wrong but will advise how to get the maximum return from your site for your business and for your users, whether you’re selling online or knowledge sharing.
She’ll happily work with you / your internal team / agency to translate your ideas into tangible fixes or complete ecommerce solutions that meet web accessibility guidelines. She can also equip others to use usability principles and web best practice themselves. She can be the information architect and come up with a new or improved site navigation for you, or perhaps do a usability consultant style review. She's also able to blend a usability review with advice on improving your search engine rankings and how you operate for commercial advantage.
My first job as Head of Online in ntl:Telewest Business' Marketing Department (now Virgin Media Business) was to bring the ntl and the Telewest websites into one. In doing so I was able to significantly reduce the online budget and move to a CMS (content management system) the staff didn't want to swear at but happily used without getting stuck. The site when reviewed against competitors by telecoms services buyers was deemed to be the best one. A ten fold increase in B2B leads generated through ntltelewestbusiness.co.uk was achieved on a minimal budget by improving the whole user experience combined with aggressive focus on cost-effective placements in Google results.
"Information architecture means content structure, navigation and labelling – for sites that sell usability starts with the naming of products"
